Staying Heart Healthy at Thai Bloom

At Thai Bloom, we treat all of our customers as honored guests. That means that we are as concerned for your health and happiness as we are about your dining experience.

In the United States alone, heart disease, stroke, and/or other cardiovascular complications claim the lives of over three-quarters of a million people each year. That’s roughly one-third of all deaths – more than all forms of cancer combined. Of the 720,000 people who experience heart attacks annually, a full 45% are NOT at a medical facility when the incident occurs.

cpr, aed, and first aid trainedWe certainly hope that our guests are not afflicted by this silent killer. However, we stand ready to take action should the unimaginable happen while visiting one of our establishments. Nine staff members have completed training on youth and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of automated external defibrillator (AED), and first aid.

We’re very sensitive to guests who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease as well as those who simply want to be attentive to their food choices. Our expert servers are ready, willing, and able to give you a guided tour through the menu to help you make informed choices. Fortunately, most Thai food is already heart healthy!

At Thai Bloom, we prepare our food with the freshest ingredients. Most dishes are steamed, broiled, grilled, stir-fried, or roasted. We’re use oil very sparingly. Vegan and gluten-free options are available. Your server can also describe portion size to help you gauge how much food to order. And, of course, we’re happy to package leftovers for a tasty reminder of your visit!

Please do not be shy about sharing your concerns or asking questions. We are here to serve you and will accommodate your needs as best we can.

Here’s to your health!

Thai Bloom Supports Friends of the Children

Thai Bloom was a proud contributor to the 2016 Friend Raiser benefitting Friends of the Children (FOTC). Funds raised at the event totalled $1.9 million.

friends of the childrenFriends of the Children is an organization that breaks the cycle of generational poverty through salaried, professional mentoring. We select the children facing the highest risks and commit to working with those children from kindergarten through graduation. Mentors teach positive values while setting the expectation for each child to become a healthy, productive member of the community.

By giving youth the tools and confidence they need to meet long-term outcomes, the Friends program addresses root causes of generational poverty and marginalization. Achievement of these goals not only has a life-changing effect on graduates of the Friends program, but also has a substantial benefit to society as a whole. For every $1 invested in the organization, more than $7.60 is returned to the community as a result of higher wages earned and lower burdens on social safety nets and the justice system.

FOTC Portland Executive Director Megan Lewis writes:

“Thanks to your generosity, even more of our community’s most vulnerable children will be matched with a salaried, professional Friend. Thanks to you, those children will be able to create brighter futures for themselves by graduating high school and avoiding both the justice system and early parenting. We are deeply grateful for your contribution.”

Meet Nam Kaewborworn

Nam KaewborwornIf you’ve ever visited our Beaverton restaurant, chances are you’ve been greeted warmly by our Assistant Manager Nam Kaewborworn. A veteran Server, Hostess, and Assistant Manager, she joined the Thai Bloom! family when we opened our doors for business. As she has become so dear to many of our regular guests, we thought you’d like to know a little bit about her.

Nam was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. She lived with her parents and younger brother amidst a cluster of homes that her grandparents built to house their children and grandchildren. With no fences separating the back yards, all of the cousins grew up together as if they were one big family. Regular gatherings at Grandma’s house kept everyone in close connection – a bond that remains strong to this day.

College years provided the opportunity for Nam to live and work abroad. She joined her Uncle’s staff as a Server at his Thai restaurant in Australia.

Nam traveled to Portland after college to attend graduate school. After receiving her Master’s degree in marketing from City University of Seattle, she decided to try her hand in real estate. It was a difficult market at the time, prompting Nam to consider other options.

As one who loves Thai food, Nam sampled the food at many establishments throughout the Greater Portland Area. She was particularly impressed by the cuisine, presentation, and atmosphere at the Typhoon! restaurant in downtown Portland. She applied for a position and worked there for several years as a Server and Assistant Manager. While saddened by the closing of that business, she was delighted to join her colleagues at Thai Bloom! a short year later.

When asked what she enjoys about Thai Bloom!, the food remains a stand-out. She says the Thai Bloom! chefs are very creative in that they take traditional Thai food and “fusion it” with a taste of the Pacific Northwest. While all of the dishes still have a distinctive Thai flavor, they find a fresh expression on the Thai Bloom! menu.

Nam also appreciates the sense of family that she experiences at the restaurant. “I love the diversity of the staff. We come from different places and walks of life, yet we all work together harmoniously,” she says. “It is a wonderful place to work.”

Among the things Nam values about her employers is the flexibility they give her to pursue her passion – Latin competitive ballroom dancing. In addition to extensive training, she takes trips regularly from San Francisco to Miami to compete. And, of course, she also takes time every year to visit family in Thailand and travel the countryside.

To whet your appetite, here are some interesting facts about a few of our Spring-Summer Specials:

Bags of Goldpear-saladFried Pork ShankDeath by Asparagus

Bags of Gold

This traditional Thai appetizer combines prawns, water chestnuts, green onions, and white pepper in a crispy wrapper. It looks like a little gift that a family member or friend might receive after visiting an elder. Our “gifts” are handmade by our chefs with delicate rice paper and tied off with a sliver of green onion. Dipped in plum sauce, each bag of gold becomes a delicious and satisfying treat.

Pear Salad

This refreshing salad represents a fusion of a traditional Thai Dish (Papaya Salad) with distinctly Northwest ingredients. Our chefs combine a green pear, red tomatoes, red onion, garlic, chili, and cashew with a lime dressing and add skewered grilled prawns. The resulting dish is as much a feast for the eyes as it is on the palate.

Fried Pork Shank

If you travel to Thailand, chances are you’ll have an opportunity to sample Khao Kha Moo, the traditional Thai dish that provided the inspiration for this special. When served by street vendors, diners receive the full measure of a pork shank – meat, fat, skin, and bone. Thai Bloom reimagined this dish as an upscale entrée in which the pork shank is braised in a light soy gravy and fried to perfection. It is served with mustard greens, green onion, chili, cilantro, and diced bell pepper. The portion is generous, and the flavor is truly amazing. When people try it, they love it.

Jungle Asparagus

For the truly adventurous diner, our chefs created the Jungle Asparagus. The dish consists of fresh asparagus stir-fried in a dry red curry paste with Krachi (wild ginger root), jalapenos, and bell peppers. It is one of the spiciest dishes on the menu. As with the Pear Salad, the recipe takes a traditional Thai preparation and applies it to a featured Northwest vegetable.
